Companion Planting Techniques of Early Native Americans.

Squanto was the Wampanoag Native American who taught the Pilgrims to plant corn in mounds  fertilized  with fishĒ The other two sisters were beans and squash. With this efficient and intensive gardening style, each family could sustain their needs on about one acre of land. Many of the tribes of the Northeast, including the Iroquois, used the Wampanoag garden design. Planted without plowing or tilling, the traditional Wampanoag garden includes corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers. The corn and beans are planted in mounds, with squash planted between the mounds. The sunflowers are planted along the north edge of the garden, so that they do not cast a shadow on the other crops. The low growing squash holds down weeds while the corn provides support for the beans
