Monsanto Purchase of Worlds Largest Seed Producer is Cause for Concern.

Missouri Ag Connection reports that Monsanto has completed its purchase of Seminis, Inc., the world's largest producer of fruit and vegetable seeds. Some proponents of organic and sustainable agriculture have expressed concern about the purchase Seminis controls an estimated 40 percent of the U.S. vegetable seed market and 20 percent of the world market; its seeds are distributed through dozens of commercial and garden seed catalogs, including Johnnyís, Fedco, and Territorial, which also serve organic producers. Many farmers, as well as agricultural professionals , are concerned that the purchase could lead to a decrease in varietal selection for farmers and the potential acceleration of biotech applications in the vegetable sector
