Recommended Organic Gardening Books

There are so many gardening books out there, that it’s hard to know where to start. Some have lots of technical information while others are mostly pretty coffee table books with lots of beautiful pictures of professionally designed and built gardens. Reference type books are invaluable as a source for easy to find problem solving techniques, while picture books help inspire us to create gardens that nourish the spirit as well as the body.

Ideally the best book is the one that motivates you to go out and start your own organic garden.

One of the first names that come to mind when recommending books on organic gardening is Rodale. I still refer to my 1970 edition of “HOW TO GROW ORGANIC VEGETABLES AND FRUITS BY THE ORGANIC METHOD”.

Rodale Press has three current books that we would highly recommend:

Rodale's All-New Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening
Rodale's All-New Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening : The Indispensable Resource for Every Gardener

Over 400 entries of the most practical, up-to-date gardening information ever, collected from garden experts and writers nationwide.

Lastly, “Great Garden Companions : A Companion Planting System For A Beautiful, Chemical-Free Vegetable Garden” by Sally Jean Cunningham is a great book about companion planting. Companion planting is a wonderfully sensible approach to organic gardening that involves planting species that seem to have symbiotic relationships with each other by providing an attraction to beneficial insects, unlocking soil nutrients and more.
